- The leader of Agang has lashed out at the ANC and accused them of betraying the liberation
- She called on people take responsibility for the current crisis South Africa faces
- Ramphele said that the ANC is just a political party and does not own a monopoly on the liberation of South Africa
Briefly.co.za learned from the sowetanlive.co.za that Mamphela Ramphela, Agang leader, has slammed the ANC for "continuing to vote in people who steal from the poor." She was speaking outside the Anglican Church of the Holy Redeemer in Sea Point on Sunday.
She further accused the ANC of failing to lead and betraying the promise of freedom in a post-apartheid South Africa.
Ramphele had delivered the keynote address at the 96th anniversary of the church. Congregants from all over the Cape Flats area attended the event.
Families from the area experienced the humiliation and injustice of being displaced by the apartheid government's forced removals in 1959.
She called for the citizens to take responsibility for the political crisis the country currently faces including the corruption and violence against children and women.
“It starts with us‚ we the citizens are the stewa rds of this democracy. Whatever goes right and wrong we must take responsibility."
Ramphele stated that the leadership which the people chose was ultimately decided by the ethics those people lived their lives by.
The Agang leader continued and said that the wounds created by injustices caused by corruption, apartheid and the current government have not healed. She lamented the fact that the rich continued to get rich while the poor got poorer.
She said that the people were too preoccupied with the ANC and have forgotten that it is just a political party and their contribution to liberation is no different to that of every South African who marched on the street, factory floors and in churches.
“Why are we preoccupied with what the ANC does or doesn’t do? They have failed to lead. They have betrayed the promise of freedom and they need to repent like we need to repent for continuing to vote in people who are stealing from poor people‚” she said.
