- ANC is confident that the EFF will support its motion of no confidence against Herman Mashaba
- EFF officials met with Paul Mashatile this week to discuss the proposed motion
- ANC needs the support of the EFF for the motion to pass
The African National Congress (ANC) which is the official opposition party in the City of Johannesburg council is confident of securing the backing of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the upcoming motion of no confidence vote against Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba.
The City of Johannesburg council is scheduled to debate motions of no confidence brought by the ANC against Mashaba and City Speaker Vasco da Gama on Wednesday and Thursday.
ANC Gauteng provincial chairperson Paul Mashatile held talks with unnamed EFF officials in recent days in an attempt to get the party to back its motion. The EFF recently admitted that it regretted supporting the Democratic Alliance in appointing Mashaba.
Briely.co.za can confirm that ANC Johannesburg spokesperson Jolidee Matongo said he was confident that the EFF would support their attempt to oust Mashaba.
Matongo told News24.com that the ANC did not expect the EFF’s support in trying to regain control of the council but it would be prepared to discuss the matter with the EFF at the right time.
The ANC feels it has a good chance of securing the 30 EFF votes it needs to secure a majority during voting on the motion. The party has been buoyed by recent comments by EFF leader Julius Malema.
Malema recently said he regretted supporting the DA and appointing a man who has a history of only selling hair products.
The DA says the ANC’s attempt to remove Mashaba is frivolous and an attempt to shift focus from corruption uncovered by Mashaba. The DA alleges that Mashaba has uncovered fraud to the value of about R12 billion by the previous administration.
The ANC have denied these allegations and challenged the DA to provide proof of the alleged fraud.
