The municipality has come under fire for renting a stall at the recent Nedbank Golf Challenge held at Sun City. The stall cost the municipality a whopping R104 178. The costs included stall rental at R37 620, R34 200 for a banner, R17 158 to have the stall furnished and a further R15 200 in accommodation fees.

Briefly.co.za gathered that during a council meeting earlier this week the Democratic Alliance (DA) asked how much the municipality had already paid in rental costs for the car. The municipality said the DA needed to specify the exact period.

According to a report by Citizen.co.za the municipality has been renting the luxury car for more than six months. This after the mayoral BMW X5 which was purchased in 2014 for R934 579 broke down.

The municipal manager wants to purchase a new mayoral vehicle but the mayor has not yet made up her mind about the make and specification of the vehicle.

The DA also questioned whether the rental vehicle had been used for personal transportation. The council said it had only been used for official purposes but pointed out that according to the mayoral handbook the mayor could use the vehicle for any reasonable purpose.

The municipality said it had identified the Nedbank Golf Challenge as an opportunity to promote itself as tourism destination.
